Kretikos means "from Crete" -- the largest isle in the Greek Aegean. Planted on the northern part of the island, the vineyards are buffered from the hot North African winds by mountains. The Sea of Crete's northerly breezes cool the vines during the hot, dry summer. Winemaking on Crete dates back to the Minoan civilization, 4,000 years ago, as evidenced by the oldest known wine press, which was discovered on the island. Not far from Knossos, the famed archaeological site, is the southernmost of Boutari's properties, the Fantaxometocho Estate ("Haunted Cottage"), with a well-preserved 300-year-old cottage (haunted?). This light-bodied, unoaked white is made from the local Vilana grape. It's full of citrusy flavors and, although quite dry, the sunny fruit pads any tartness. The cheerful aromas remind one of the sea, super-fresh and bracing. Imagine yourself with a plate of Greek mezzethakia (little tapas), juicy Calamata olives, a hunk of perfect feta and crusty fresh bread. Add a few stuffed grape leaves, drizzle your best olive oil on a gorgeous tomato, and you've given this white a reason to sing during your supper. - Master Sommelier Madeline Triffon, The Detroit News
