Morgon is one of the best sub-appellations in Beaujolais and Jean Foillard’s Cote du Py is one of the very finest wines made there, period. Don’t confuse this with those little fruit bowls that are labeled Beaujolais Nouveau or Beaujolais Villages. This is a wine of considerable depth and character. While it certainly shows a lovely Gamay personality, with its rich black cherry, raspberry and strawberry flavors and aromas, all underscored with a subtle earthiness, it performs very well in much the same way that Pinot Noir does, matching nicely with many of the same kinds of food. (Remember, Beaujolais is a satellite region of Burgundy, and Gamay is a member of the same family as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the red and white Burgundian stalwarts.) This already drinks beautifully with an hour in a decanter, but it has the structure to age up to ten years from the vintage date and the track record from past vintages to prove it. We take this one home for ourselves, so that makes it a Winebuys staff favorite!
