A sixth generation wine producer from Champagne, Jean-Louis Denois has broughtworld-class technique to the sparkling wines ofLimoux. An area that has produced sparklingwine for hundreds of years longer thanChampagne. Limoux is best known for itsBlanquette, made from Mauzac. The sparklingwine, Blanquette, gets its name from the whitecolor of the bottom of the Mauzac's leaves. However, Jean-Louis is not a fan of the local Mauzac grapevariety, which he has ripped out of his vineyards. Nevertheless, he is a fan of the terroir in Limoux. Inthe Languedoc, Limoux is an area of contrasts. The vineyards are relatively high in altitude, at 200 to400 meters above sea level. The soil is clay and limestone with many pebbly areas. The combination ofthis soil with higher-altitude, cooler vineyards, createsone of the best settings in the Languedoc for growingPinot Noir and Chardonnay. However, less than 1% ofthe wineries bottle and sell their own wine. Medium straw color, with pungent, expressive green apple and mineral flavors and aromas. Fairly ripe, with rich stony character and plenty of zip and zest. A Winebuys staff favorite!
